RDSO as well as other regulatories has specified the specifications of the various traction distribution components as per their specific requirements and operating conditions under which it is supposed to be operated. Therefore the specification issued by the particular regulatory normally depends upon the system of traction being used, climate and working condition of the region/country. However we will find certain impact of cost of equipments is also deciding factor of it's specification also as it decides the cost of services.

SPECIFICATION OF POTENTIAL TRANSFORMERS

In 25KV electric traction system takes power from two out of three phases of 132KV and 220KV transmission system. Since the power consumed by each TSS/GSS is normally in the range of 10-25 MW and does not results much unbalancing in the power supply system and could be easily compensated by rotation of these phases for traction supply at next TSS/GSS or by compensating to other distribution loads.  However after the increased discipline in power sector and greater matter of concern for negative and zero sequence current the balanced loading conditions are requested for traction supply system also. Also with the adoption of 2x25KV high power system for high traffic or hauling routes the power requirement has also increased more than double requires adoption of SCOTT Connected transformers for these systems. The commissioning of 2x25 kV OHE system of Bina- Katni and Katni-Anuppur- Bishrampur-Chirimiri was done in the year 1994-95 and the specification for the SCOTT connected transformer of this system has formed by RDSO by Technical Specification number ETI/PSI/124 (7/95) for 54 MVA 22KV/2x27 KV SCOTT connected transformer has developed in year 1995.

IR has already decided that all the new maintenance vehicles (Popularly known as Tower Wagon) being procured should be 8 Wheeler type in future. However several 8 Wheeler Tower Wagons are still in the services and the specification of 4 Wheeler Tower wagon was introduced in June 2007. Several numbers PHOOLTAS make tower wagons are introduced in the services very recently in the years 2011-12.

Since long back various ATD of 1:3 as well as 1:5 mechanical advantage ATDs are in service like 5 Pulley ATD, Winch type ATD, 3 Pulley ATD first two are 1:5 and later one is 1:3 mechanical advantage ATD are in service. The earlier version of 5 pulley ATD imported from Switzerland and widely used in the section having electrified in 1960-70 having several extraordinary rugged design features like needle bearings, free movement and being phased out due to completion of codal life and cases of drum wearing has noticed. The additional advantage of 1:5 mechanical advantage is lesser counter weight in the ATD. However with the introduction of high speed Trains and with the planning of increased sectional speed the tension in the OHE has planned to be increased and the new 5 pulley ATD for tension of 2400 Kgf in place of 2000 Kgf has introduced.

However recent instruction in this reagrd is as follows.
Insulated Catenary are generally used under Overline structures to avoid any breakage of catenary strands subsequent to any earth fault.
The various instructions earlier issued on the subject matter is being reproduced below in chronological manner for kind appraisal and superseding/cancellations of earlier instructions to avoid confusion among various levels.
TI/MI/0036 was issued on 08.09.1999 for PROVISION OF INSULATED CADMIUM COPPER CATENARY WIRE under OVERLINE structures along with RDSO specification number TI/SPC/OHE/INSCAT/0000 dated June 2009 (Copy Attached).
Subsequent to the failure of Srirangam- Tiruchchirapalli Town section on dated 17.08.2012 in which found that 9 outer layer was damaged during erection at the time of electrification in the section on 22.03.2009 itself and remaining 10 strands (3 outer 7 inner ) has cut subsequent to that with the elapses of time. SMI TI/MI/0047 was issued on 28.09.2012 after this failure (Copy Attached).
Recent case of failure of Contact and Catenary wires of Surat-Udhna section of Western Railway dated 24.05.2017 RB letter no 2003/RE/161/1/Vol IIi/Pt. dated 19.06.2017 for using contact piece in place of catenary wire at vulnerable location and contact wire along with catenary wire at other locations has issued alongwith not using 9T composite insulator in vertical position with same letter no dated 19.06.17 has also issued (Copy Attached).
Another one study report submitted by RDSO in the regard of provision of Insulating Paint on overline structure vide letter number TI/OHE/EC-AC/11 dated 24.11.2011 after studing the provision of insulating paint on the bottom of ROB at Patripul in Kalyan at CR (Copy Attached).
In the same line the ECR/HQ letter No ECR/ELE/100/2 dated 21.12.16 and RDSO letter No. TI/OHE/POLICY/INS CAT/16/01 DATED 02.12.2016 also needs to be withdrawn (Copy Attached).
Development of Shielded insualted catenary and effects of CORONA on the failure of insulation of insulated catenary vide RDSO letter No. TI/PSI/PROTCT/FAILURE/12/02 DATED 21.02.2017  and recommendation of RDSO for using contact wire in place of insulated catenary wire by letter no TI/PSI/PROTCT/Failure/12 dated 18.03.2016 susequent to NR and WR failures has attached along with RB notesheet of the decision of same with Noting of ED/EEM, AML and MTR.
